About Sarah Hamilton

Sarah is a DONA-certified Birth and Postpartum Doula and a Lamaze-trained Childbirth Educator, with an MFA in Creative Writing.  She began attending births almost 20 years ago while helping with the homebirths of her godchildren, and immediately felt the work was a great fit for her. This passion for birth was further fueled by the arrival of her two daughters now 18 and 15, as well as the births of many other friends and friends of friends. Today, Sarah feels the same awe and fascination for the birth process as she did that first time, and feels very fortunate to have the opportunity to support women and families through such an unforgetable experience.

In addition to her training and birth experience both personally and professionally, Sarah also brings considerable life experience to her practice, including a 25+ year yoga and distance/chi running practice; over 25 years in various professional settings--from wilderness guide/instructor and trainer, to  writer and teacher and nonprofit consultant.  The combination of these diverse skills and interests enable her to offer her clients calm, solid and unbiased support and information; respectful and professional advocacy and communication with care providers; and a deep understanding of and appreciation for the innate abilities of the human body, mind, and spirit-- especially the birthing woman! Her approach to birth work is very much rooted in her lifetime involvement with the natural world and the creative imagination, each of which has taught her much about the remarkable lifeforce in all of us.

Sarah is continually expanding her knowledge and training in the field, and actively involved in the birthing community, In a addition to a number of birth and postpartum doula networks, believing firmly that all women should have access to doula support, she also coordinates the Birthways Volunteer Doula Program and works with the San Francisco General Hospital Doula Program as well. Sarah loves to turn her clients on to the abundance of local resources and wonderful birth and early parenting-related practitioners here in the Bay Area.
